Frontier | Netflix Picks

1h | adventure | Peter Blackie, Rob Blackie | Jason Momoa, Landon Liboiron, Zoe Boyle

In January I wrote this this post about 4 new tv series being released that month that I wanted to watch and, being a Netflix original, Frontier was definitely one of them. It’s a month later now and I finally got around to watching it!

Frontier takes place in North America in the late 18th century. The fur trade is booming business and the Hudson’s Bay Company‘s holds monopoly over it. Outlaw Declan Harp tries to breach their monopoly with the help of his Native American friends and Irish stowaway Michael Smyth.

The trailer didn’t really do much for me at the time, but I wanted to give Frontier a shot anyway, because Netflix originals usually don’t disappoint! Frontier kind of did a wee bit, because even though it all looks very beautiful and the story is quite interesting, it just feels quite superficial. There’s an evident lack of character development and if the writers had put a little more effort into this, the characters would be a lot more intriguing and believable.

Frontier also doesn’t have the best acting…although I did think Alun Armstrong, Zoe Boyle and Landon Liboiron did a good job. Evan Jonigkeit not so much, but I mostly blame the writing for that. His character Captain Chesterfield is all over the place.

Despite the points I just mentioned, I think Frontier is still pretty entertaining and has a lot of potential. I hope they will step it up in season 2! There’s only 6 episodes in this first season anyway, so if you don’t have anything to do during the weekend or are in bed recovering from the flu, give it a go!

My Rating: 6.0 – it’s not Vikings, but still pretty entertaining!

Have you seen Frontier yet? Let me know in the comments! c; comments on this post
