After wanting to to go there since they openend, I finally went to La Lanterna, the new Italian restaurant around the corner from our house. It’s actually the fourth (!) La Lanterna restaurant in The Hague. It all started with the first establishment in the Javastraat in 1975 and then another two followed in the Dagelijkse Groenmarkt in the city centre and in the Keizerstraat in Scheveningen. I had been to the establishment in the city center a few times before and last Monday even! It has a typical old fashioned Italian decor and really good Italian food.
I already knew from peeking in every time I walked passed it, that the new establishment at Laan van Meerdervoort has a much more modern interior and a -shall we say- more fancy look overall. They also seem to have a different menu. Now that really peeked my interest! I actually tried to reserve a table there a few weeks ago, but they were fully booked. I’d say that says a lot about a restaurant that isn’t exactly in the city center!
On Thursday night, most shops stay open until 21:00 hrs, so I imagined most people would be hanging out in the city centre and tonight just might be a good night to see if they had a table for us. And luckily, I was right! So I dragged my boyfriend to come with me to try the new La Lanterna Laan van Meerdervoort .
At the front of the restaurant you are greeted by twinkling lights in the ceiling and a gorgeous, industrial looking door. This industrial look is carried into the restaurant and is warmed by green, brown and copper details and the wooden floor and tables. From the industrial light fixtures to the with rusty embossed steel sheets covered back wall, I loved it all!
The bar makes a great focal point and the open kitchen is very nicely decorated with copper pans. It also gives a great view of the impressive wood-fired oven!
The menu looked very good and is fortunately a lot smaller than the establishment in the city center. That makes choosing a lot easier!
I chose one of the house specials: the Tortelloni al Granchio (pasta with king krab). It looked and tasted just as impressive as it sounds! It became one of my most favorite pasta dishes I have ever eaten with the first bite! The crab was so buttery and and the pasta was cooked just right. The flavor of the sauce didn’t overpower the delicate crab taste at all. The portion size was pretty generous as well. I ended up bringing some leftovers home in a doggy bag and had it for lunch the next day.
The Torta Pere e Ricotta (pear and ricotta pie) I had for dessert was also the perfect way to finish the meal. Not overpoweringly sweet, just right! The bf had a Souffle al Pistacchio (pistachio soufflé) and that was absolutely devine as well!
Our host and server was very charming and very Italian. If you’ve been to a real Italian place, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Italian servers seem to have a more laid back style, witty banter and do not cater to your every whim. The latter is actually kind of nice, as I’m quite used to waiters that just sort of hover around your table in wait of requests. It makes me feel so much less rushed!
